In 1887 it was Coca Cola the sales rep distributed complimentary coupons for Coca-Cola coupons were mailed to potential customers and were also place in magazines.

Later in 1909 C.W.Post used the idea to help sell breakfast cereals.

1894: The year that coupons were born. After purchasing the formula for Coca-Cola for $2,300, Asa Candler creates and distributes hand written tickets for a free glass of his new fountain drink.

It was Coca-Cola. I looked on Wikipedia. I'm glad they were invented, ha ha!

Asa Chandler created them in order for people to try his new beverage Coca-Cola in 1887.
