The first self serve grocery store was opened in 1916. It was called Piggly Wiggly. It was located in Memphis, Tennessee by Clarence Saunders.
Well there is a debate, they say it was the Piggly Wiggly in 1916 by Saunders but the the first true supermarket in the United States was opened by Michael J. Cullen in 1930, in Jamaica, Queens in New York City it was called King Kullen. (The difference was King Kullen was divided into food departments and had a parking lot! But the Piggly Wiggly was the first "self serve" store.)
